It totally flew by me, but August 11 was the 17th anniversary of The Comic Book Attic.  I will blame the sparse release of episodes on the podcast being a teenager.

Category:blog -- posted at: 10:33am EDT

Just a quick note to acknowledge that August 11 was the 15 year birthday of The Comic Book Attic!  I didn't have an opportunity to do a podcast to celebrate, but here's hoping my job eases up soon so that I can podcast a bit more regularly... and here's to 15+ more years in the Attic!

Category:blog -- posted at: 7:48pm EDT

Today is the 13th birthday of the podcast.  While I don't have a new podcast to release for the occasion, I will soon have a week off and plan to record a new episode then. I also plan to finally edit the metric ton of already-recorded movie podcasts I have languishing on my computer.

Meanwhile, my podcast is now officially a teenager...

Yes, for the fourth time since 2012, I'm moving to a new home.  This time, I am escaping Baltimore after four years living there.

So, during this month of April, I'll be moving while also trying to work.  This means a brief hiatus for the podcast.  I'll also need much of May to get my new home in order.  Moving and arranging 47,000 comics and 12,000 movies is a feat of engineering.

I will return soon.

Hi folks. After an unintentional month's break, the podcast will return later this week. Unexpected concentration on musical projects has kept me away. More on that later.

Category:blog -- posted at: 9:15am EDT

a couple weeks off

You may have noticed there's been no podcast in a couple weeks, and there may not be one for another week or so.  This has been for mainly two reasons:

1. I have changed jobs, and the time and energy consumed finishing at one job and starting the next (simultaneously!) has left me exhausted.

2. The "election."  I don't usually talk about politics on The Comic Book Attic, so I will leave that to the blog or one of my other podcasts; nevertheless, this recent presidential election was an utter disgusting disgrace.  The outcome has made me feel so sick and terrified for the future... and the thought of doing something fun like podcasting just isn't in me right now.

Trump is a monster, and I could never support him.  All the talk of unity and moving on is silly because good people don't unite with villains.  Good people fight back against villains.

I have refrained from mentioning this before because I didn't think he could possibly win, but DC Comics called it long ago when they based the post-Crisis Lex Luthor on a Trump-like business man

and eventually made him president.

But this comparison would be an insult to Lex Luthor, so I'll let that go...

Anyway, this madness has destroyed my faith in humanity quite a bit, so I haven't felt like engaging that same humanity with a podcast.  I'll return when my stomach stops churning.

Cheers...

a little bit of the DCU in Baltimore...

Taken not too far from where I live... all we need is a glimpse of the Newsboy Legion and Superman, and we're set.

Category:blog -- posted at: 10:38pm EDT

Hey, all.

In case you missed the announcement, I'm currently in the process of "moving house," as some folks say.  The upcoming week will be the big finish to the moving and the big start to the unpacking.  I hope to have the house (and internet) in order by the end of the week.  I've recorded several short episodes to cover the weeks I've missed, and they will be mixed and uploaded as soon as I can.

Category:blog -- posted at: 7:21pm EDT

Just a quick note to let everyone know that this week's episode will be late, so there will be two episodes for you next week.  In CBA #156, I'll have a look at some issues of New Mutants.

The Comic Book Attic's first official podcast was released eight years ago on August 11, 2006. While the output has slowed and evolved and branched out, I'm happy to still be recording my humble little audio bits.  Thanks to everyone who listens.

Here are two videos that were the sources for some of the audio in Far-Out Sounds from the Six-Panel Grid episodes...

I am moving to Baltimore!  I started a new job in the city, and I'm in the process of moving to my new digs.  I last moved a little over two years ago, so I know the harrowing work ahead of me moving the collection.  I may be off the grid for awhile as I get settled, but I'm still here.

There's plenty of comic book opportunities in the city, and I've already added another comic shop to my list of first visits: Cards, Comics, and Collectibles. The best part is that the Baltimore ComicCon will now be a definite annual experience.

news

Hi, all...

I just wanted to post an update on the podcast.

After months of trying to settle on the theme, feel, and format of a new comic book podcast, I have finally figured it out.  All will be revealed in a CBA or CBA Extra episode that will appear soon.  Meanwhile, I will leave you with a title: Far-Out Sounds from the Six-Panel Grid.

Talk to you soon...

While you are waiting for a new comic book podcast from me (one of which is currently recorded, but in several unedited pieces), you can hear my review of Reagan's Raiders #1 from Solson Comics on Podcast X episode 199.  You will also find a review of issue #2 by the host of Podcast X, T. Mafia.  Check it out.  It's easily one of the most godawful comics I've ever read.

Frazetta album cover

I picked up this 1965 comedy album for a quarter.  I was surprised to find that the cover artist credited was Frank Frazetta, famed fantasy and comic artist.  Turns out he drew the heads on the chess pieces.  I will never cease to be amazed at what curiosities one can find by accident...

Just checking in.  Next episode will have an important announcement.  In the meantime, I reached a personal best of reading 200 comics in the month of December.  I've also started (finally) transferring my unread boxes of comics into drawerboxes to match the half of the collection I have read.  Sometimes this wonderful hobby can be dreadfully expensive...

I have a new episode recorded, and it will be posted soon.  I'll be recording another episode talking about comics I read this past month of September.  I beat my personal record (of 142) for comics in one month by reading 153.  I know, I know, some of you may read more than that in a month regularly, but it is a chore for me to find the time usually.

August 11 marked the 6th anniversary of The Comic Book Attic.  I will record an episode soon, folks.  Meanwhile, I found these documentaries available on YouTube (at least for now) that you might enjoy:

I have had quite a month.  I moved over New Year's and finally got everything unpacked and arranged last week. I've also gotten sick a few times during and since moving.  With any luck, I hope to get back to podcasting soon.  I have a few episodes of various podcasts recorded; I just need the editing time. Until later...

New episode coming soon with my Black Friday finds.

Meanwhile, I found this series of hilarious commercials on YouTube advertising a comic shop's Black Friday sale.  Check it out with the link below.

I am still here.  I have a new, albeit short, episode recorded, and it will be out soon.  If not sooner, look for it on Halloween.  I recently got a new computer, and I am trying to improve my recording sound quality.  We'll see how that goes.  In the meantime, here's a trailer for something interesting:

I present to you a photo taken at the Baltimore Comic Con of Stan Lee and me.  There were two other friends in the picture, but I cropped them out just in case they didn't want their images out there.  If you want to see the full picture, find me on Facebook.

First, I wanted to let listeners know that I am still here and recording.  July has been a challenging month for personal matters.

Second, I wanted to relate a personal best.  Last month (June), I set myself another 100 comics reading goal, and actually hit 142.  To my knowledge, this is the most I've ever read in a month.

Finally, the 5th anniversary of The Comic Book Attic is approaching, and this time, I want to put together a big episode (which for me means about an hour).  This may actually end up being the next episode, so look for it on or around August 11.

Just wanted to let listeners know that all is well.  March has been one of the most intensely busy months I've weathered at work.  An entire week could pass without my computer even getting powered on.  I have, however, been able to record bits while driving that can be put together later.  April looks a lot more relaxed, and I'll have some time off to podcast.

The Cinematic Attic

This is a placeholder for the link to The Cinematic Attic: http://cinematicattic.libsyn.com/

There you will find all my movie-related podcasts and blog content.

The Cinematic Attic returns to its own page

That's right, folks.  I have revived the separate libsyn page for The Cinematic Attic.  Why?  As much as I didn't want to realize it, my interest in film has become almost equal to my interest in comics.  I have a lot of great ideas for new movie podcasts, youtube vids, and other content.  It just feels right for me to have a page devoted to lots of comic podcasts, a page for all the movie podcasts, and a page for a variety of other podcasts.  The trinity of Mike, if you will.

I am in the process of migrating all the Cinematic Attic content that was exclusive to The Attic of Babel page to its rightful home, http://cinematicattic.libsyn.com/  As the items are moved, I will be deleting them from The Attic of Babel page.

If all the content moving of the past year has confused and frustrated anyone, I apologize.  I think this will finally straighten it all out.

my first price guide

For me as a kid, the normal edition of Overstreet's price guide was way out of the scope of my small allowance, so when the first edition of the smaller, cheaper Price Guide Companion came out, I got it as soon as I was able.  It was a revelation to see all the different titles I'd never heard of.  I looked at and studied this guide so much that the spine split into two halves.  I still have it, though.  From there, I graduated to borrowing the normal editions from the library until I was finally able to afford to buy them.  I buy a new Overstreet guide every few years, but it never has the same effect as that first little abridged pocket edition.

one of my favorite books about comics

The Comic Book Heroes: From the Silver Age to the Present by Will Jabobs and Gerard Jones.  I bought this book when I was a kid and DEVOURED it.  It was the first history of the comic book heroes I ever read, and it was so intensely fascinating, I can't even put in to words how valuable this volume was to my young comic-reading mind.  Its history only began with the Silver Age, but I wasn't complaining; up until this book, the only history I got to experience was issues of Marvel Saga and reprint comics.  Highly recommended then and now.

Category:blog -- posted at: 12:22am EDT

another influential book

Collecting Comic Books by Marcia Leiter.  I got this book at a yard sale as a kid, and it helped shape the comic collector in me at an early age.  I learned all the basics of comic collecting, including the terminology, the grading system, and the ways one could hunt down comics (at least 20 years ago).

emphasis on the fun and not the profit...

Make Your Own Comics For Fun and Profit was a book I read a lot as a kid.  It was among the books in the library where I went to 6th grade, and I checked it out again and again.  As a youngster, I made my own comics-- hundreds of them.  This book was an inspiration to my young comic-creating mind.  As an adult, I found this book secondhand and bought my own copy.

I plan on adding more comic book themed podcasts to this page.  Some may be segment spin-offs (like maybe a Run With It! podcast), others will be new ideas (like a podcast on Marvel's alternate Earths or a podcast on anthropomorphic animal comics or a podcast paying tribute to deceased comic creators, etc.).  That's all the info I have at this point, and I don't want to announce a bunch of things I never deliver.

I am, however, hoping to deliver at least one new podcast next week (fingers crossed).  This will require me to go into the category listing of all the CBA episodes and change them from "podcasts" to "The Comic Book Attic" so that I can categorize the new ones appropriately.

No elaborate "best of" list or anything.  I just want to make note of some 2009 reads that stood out to me.

My most fun with a comic in '09: Nova

My most detested book of '09: Hulk (the adjectiveless book)

My nicest comic discovery of '09: Atomic Robo

Just a quick note:  I've decided that the negative-numbered episodes will undergo a bit of a redesign.  In addition to whatever I talk about (whether it be what I bought that week or a review of a new comic), I will mix in other fun audio bits that are comic-related.  Old radio shows, songs, theme songs, or excerpts from anything comic-themed will be fair game.

The next proper numbered episode is half done.  It's been a busy couple months...

For all of you Blackest Night fans, follow this link http://www.garagehangover.com/?q=Caeser%26HisRomans and you'll find an mp3 for a song from 1969 called "Black Lantern" by Caesar and his Romans. It's not too bad, actually.

A couple bits of news about the podcast:

The next episode will be out over Thanksgiving.  I've also recorded bits for a couple more episodes.

I have gone through and tried to delete the spam comments from the blogpage, for those of you who read the comments.

A few months back, I also went back through the past episodes and tried to update some of the links and embed videos formerly only linked to.

I'm going to toss in more old radio shows into the negative numbered episodes.

Finally, and most importantly, I will be reposting all the CBA content sloooooowly on The Attic of Babel page.  Eventually, all podcasts I do will be available on that one page.  (Don't worry, for the foreseeable future, this CBA blogpage will still exist.)
The fun part of this is that I plan on doing a supplemental comic podcast for that page alongside each reposted CBA episode.  Consider it a commentary/update/further info podcast.  I shall call it CBA Postscript.

I didn't know him well, but from the small amount of contact we did have over the past couple years, I will very much miss his enthusiasm and opinions, his podcasting voice, his support, and his friendly demeanor.

September/October is one of the busiest times at work, and I got derailed from doing the podcast.  A new episode will appear soon, however.  I have material recorded and other material prepared.  I just need to put it together.  Until then, please enjoy some past episodes... or any of the other podcasts in The League of Comic Book Podcasts.

This forehead-slapper is all shades of wrong.  The advertising folks who came up with this one were obviously butt-stupid about comic books...

Changes are afoot with episode 101-on.  Details will be revealed in #100, but one of the changes is that I would like to have others have their voices heard concerning older comics.  I've had some interest already, and I'm looking forward to what will result.  So, anyone interested in doing a regular or irregular segment for the CBA, feel free to email me at comicbookattic (at) yahoo.com

Also, hellos and other recorded bits for episode 100 are welcome!  Deadline is Nov.30.

DC tried once to revive Archie's classic superheroes (in altered forms) as the Impact Universe.  Now, they join the DCU proper.  This link explains:

As a fan of these 65+ year old characters, I'm looking forward to seeing them again.

H'lo everyone.  I just wanted to blog this as well as mention it in the next episode.  Episode 100 is approaching, and I would like it to include as many different voices as possible.  If anyone would like to submit a hello, an old comic review, or anything at all, email me an mp3 at my yahoo address comicbookattic.  The due date was going to be the end of October, but, whoops, that's almost here.  Let's say all submissions be in by the end of November.

For that matter, anyone who'd like to be a regular contributor can let me know also.

The Comic Book Attic is officially 2 years old as of August 11, 2008.  I didn't mention it in the podcast, as it doesn't feel like a big deal anymore.  The 2nd year was not as fun as the first, and there were fewer episodes, but I'm still here.  Thanks to everyone who listens.

If you'd like to hear me ramble further about other stuff, you can do so here: The Cinematic Attic and here: The Attic Enigmatic .

If you feel like soiling your day by hearing about this fundamentalist, bigoted politician's comic book, here's the link: http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?articleID=20080717_12_OKLA363263

If you feel like being outraged, here's a link to the comic itself as a pdf: http://downloads.newsok.com/documents/rinehartcartoon.pdf

He actually sent that to voters to get reelected.  Ugh.  Horrific and disgusting.

I'm having trouble uploading the latest CBA.  Libsyn is being goofy.  But, as soon as I can get them posted, I have two new episodes finished, numbers -7 and 94.  So if anyone noticed a phantom episode -7 appearing and disappearing, you weren't imagining things... it was just technical difficulty.  Meanwhile, here are the links that'll be mentioned in #94:

I'm in a new comics mood.  I blame Secret Invasion, which has me reading a bunch more Marvels than I would normally read.  Secret Invasion has me hooked, mainly because I'm a sucker for a mystery, and this storyline has mysteries wrapped around other mysteries.  I really want to see how far back the little green ripplechins have infiltrated the Marvel Universe and influenced Marvel Universe events (like Civil War).
